From the Pastors desk - April 2020

In the 1980’s the Right Reverend David Jenkins, then Bishop of Durham, hit the headlines for saying he did not believe in the physical resurrection of Christ, and contrasted the resurrection with a "conjuring trick with bones".

The banner ‘One third of clergy do not believe in the Resurrection’ appeared in the Daily Telegraph in July 2002, and in 2006 Jenkins successor the Right Reverend N. T. Wright, also said as part of an interview in ‘The Australian’, "I have friends who I am quite sure are Christians who do not believe in the bodily resurrection”.

It seems that many have this idea that you can have Christianity without having to acknowledge or accept the idea of a bodily resurrection.  Why?

Why, when the Scriptures are so clear? Paul himself made the very point when he wrote
“And if Christ is not risen, then our preaching is empty and your faith is also empty.or as the AV renders it “your faith is also vain.”  You cannot have Christianity with Christ still in the grave, it is impossible. The Resurrection is the corner stone of our faith, without it Paul could not declare that “death is swallowed up in victory”, 2 Without the resurrection we have no hope, we are of all men the most miserable.3

Why should those who profess to be Christians deny something that the Bible teaches is fundamental to our faith? A doctrine that separates Christianity from the religions and superstitions of the world? Why O Why?

Could it be the Resurrection is an embarrassment to them? They desire to be considered  intellectually sound, and not fanatical? In other words it is to appease unbelievers the infallible, unerring, Word of Almighty God is denied, showing that they themselves are equally unbelieving and still in their sins.

Should we not take our example from the Apostles who when they were threatened for proclaiming the truth of Christ replied… “Which is right in God’s eyes: to listen to you, or to Him?”4

“Those who honour me I will honour,
but those who despise me will be disdained” 5

Christ is risen — He is risen indeed!
